I took this picture of Alicia Alonso on January 8, 2017 at the performing arts centre in Havana named in her honour. The occasion was a performance of the Nutcracker ballet, one of her most iconic roles as the prima ballerina of Cuba. She performed in New York City in the 1940s, returning to Cuba in 1948 to found a national ballet there.
At age 98 she died today in Havana, the city she loved so much. It was a city, and a country, that returned that love to her. She will be missed throughout the world of ballet.
